Light fixture for Parallel 38

I was commissioned to fabricate a unique pendant luminaire for a restaurant in Charlottesville.  The fixture measures roughly 8' in diameter by 5'.  Pics show temporary install while adjustments were made and final fitting of fiber optics and install.  Materials: Chromed steel, Brass, Glass, stainless cable, fiber optics.

Pink and Black Attack

Bob had a tired old, pollen yellow paint job in his dining room.  When I suggested black with pink pin stripes I was surprised he wanted to see a sample wall.  This part of the house is quite old and my basic idea for the design was to mimic the patterning of a planked wall with a modern twist.

Beer can on wheels...

Here is a 1975 Airstream Trade Wind land yacht!  My client brought it to me newly gutted with a fresh coat of purple paint.  The powder room, which she insists on keeping, is in the rear.  Her list of needs started something like this:  "Nothing fussy, I won't tell anyone you did this"..... Here is where the project gets challenging:  All the design and build out must be completed within 80 hours and the materials would be provided by her.  She has a 40' shipping container filled with scrap plywood.  Shards in every shape, species, and dimension.  As I draw closer to the deadline, I'm beginning to wonder if I will make it....

...Well, I was able to complete the trailer in the allotted time.  Now it is off to get fitted with cushions, lights and plumbing fixtures.  So long my friend.  I will miss you.

Backyard renovation in winter....

A large bay of glass looks out onto what was a backyard peppered with random plantings and an ill-defined surface.  The general concept for this design was to create an ordered space including a patio with grill, low seating walls, a contemplative zen-like space with dappled light and large planting area in the rear of the yard.  Materials: Corten steel, steel edging, black glazed brick, bluestone and a white pea gravel.   Pics show installation of a 30'x3' Corten steel retaining wall and low brick seating walls.  More to come...

giant cabinet

This is really big cabinet/bookshelf - 10'x30"x16".  I went with a torsion box construction for the strength and to cut down on weight.  It is veneered with vert grain douglas fir.

Mega Props

My friend Ross is filming a commercial and needing some unusual props so he hired me to build a mega magnet and anchor.  I Jedi mind tricked Ross into sculpting the anchor for me.  He's so good.  Delivery was left up to Ross.....

Making a chair

I recently acquired a lathe so, naturally, I had to make a chair.  I had a bunch of scrap white oak left over from a previous job that will just be enough to complete it.  As you can see I am designing on the fly, but hopefully this prototype will inform a better process and template if I want to make more.  The base is sort of a take on a shaker chair and the back rest is a riff on a mobler chair from the fifties that I really love.  Here are some of the process fotos.
